Extra Subjects

Piano and Computer

Piano lessons and additional I.C.T (computer) lessons are available at an extra cost.

Most of the children have I.C.T. lessons as part of their normal timetable. Extra lessons are available and many older children study adult Q.C.A. approved modules to gain an I.T.C award.

Piano Lessons

Individual piano lessons are available at school as an extra subject from the age of six years.

A piano teacher visits the school. Children have their own piano music book with which the teacher guides them through the exercises which they then practice at home before their next lesson.

Children need access to a Keyboard at home for practice. This does not have to be a piano. An electronic keyboard is equally suitable.

The cost is £110.00 a term for ten lessons. Further information is available from the school office.

Computer Classes

All the children from reception onwards attend computer classes at Gower House School. This enables them to develop confidence in using ICT and to help them to operate ICT equipment correctly and safely from an early age.

At Gower House School ICT is part of the Curriculum from Reception onwards. The main topics taught from an early age are: Character recognition, Mouse co-ordination and Keyboard skills. Some of the other units covered during this time are, an introduction to modelling, how to use a word bank, labelling and classifying, creating pictures and combining texting and graphics with the concept of database.

For year 4 onwards students can select ICT as an extra curriculum activity. At this stage they start working towards Oxford and Cambridge Entry Level certificates (OCR). There are four units to this level, and in each unit, students will sit for an OCR exam and gain a unit certificate. This certificate is recognised by secondary schools.

After completing the entry level, students are prepared towards the level 1 qualification, which is equivalent to foundation GCSE. This leaves them with a strong foundation of ICT when they start secondary school.

If any parents are interested in finding out more about the ICT curriculum, please contact the school and make an appointment with the ICT teacher.
